Course Outline:

A Day in the Life of a Hacker is an interactive introduction to the techniques of Internet hackers and the serious dangers they pose to organizations. This interactive presentation challenges the audience to play the roles of a hacker versus security analyst in a game of measures, attacks and countermeasures.

The goal of the "hackers" is to identify vulnerabilities and then run laptop demos to exploit those vulnerabilities.  The security analyst assists the audience in developing countermeasures to those attacks. Unfortunately some of the demonstrated attacks are not stopped by firewalls or intrusion detection systems. As a result, the audience will understand that technical countermeasures alone are self-defeating and that an effective information security program composed of people, processes and technology working together are the only true defense against Internet attacks.

Demos Include:

  • Searching for Home Cable and DSL vulnerabilities
  • Port scanning
  • IP spoofing
  • User spoofing
  • E-mail spoofing
  • L0phtcrack
  • Ping of Death
  • Password exploits
  • ActiveX Excel save-as exploit
  • IMAP buffer overflow
