1) All of a sudden, users
can get to blocked sites!
You may also notice an error in your event
viewer (NT) noting that the wtcontrol list failed to load.
Your wtcontrol list has expired (about every 30 days) , and you must
get a new one from webtrack.webster.com. Secure recommends
getting a new list once a week.
2) How do I get a new
control list?
You must get your customer login and ftp
to webtrack.webster.com. Your login is the serial number on
the back of the Smartfilter book. You can get your activated
password by calling Smartfilter support. The phone number is
also on the back of the book. The control list is called
"wtcontrol," and you must get it from the correct
subfolder (they are not all the same).
3) How do I install
version 2.0?
This version supports both IIS 3.0 and IIS 4.0 -
although the IIS 3.0 version will require some installation steps by
hand.
INSTALLATION:
1. Download the latest update to the SmartFilter Control
List, which is called 'wtcontrol'. If you wish to use the domain
resolved control list, then also download the file 'wtcntldr'. These
files should be placed in a /Data subdirectory underneath the
installation directory.
2. Unzip the SmartFilterForNT.zip file.
3. Execute the file setup.exe to run the setup.
4. During the configuration process visit "http://www.smartfilter.com/msphelp.htm"
for additional documentation.
5. Stop the Microsoft Proxy, IIS Server, and the IIS Admin Service
and restart them to enable SmartFilter.
IIS CONFIGURATION
Before proceeding with the installation, please make sure that the
following is true:
- IIS is up and running and has the Active Server Page feature
installed (if you do not have Active Server Pages, you will have to
add the ISAPI filter by hand to IIS4.0).
- The authentication method for the default IIS web server has
"Basic authentication" and "NT
Challenge/Response" turned on while "Anonymous" is
turned off.
- Internet Explorer is installed on the machine on which this Setup
program is run.
This is necessary because at the end of the installation, the Setup
program will attempt to launch an Active Server Page (ASP) that will
configure IIS to work with SmartFilter. This ASP page
requires administrative privileges, therefore, IIS has to be
configured with the above authentication methods so that the user's
identity can be verified. When the page is launched via the browser,
you will be asked for your user ID and password. Please authenticate
using an NT user account that has administrative privileges.
4) How do I update
Sidewinder's database (wtcontrol)?
You must download the Sidewinder wtcontrol file from ftp.smartfilter.com
to /usr/local/www/common/data/wtcontrol. There is an existing
file, so you might want to mv it to .bak or some such. Change
the TE permissions with "chtype wwwc:conf wtcontrol", and
change the owner to www and the UNIX file permissions to 444.
Restart the WWW Caching Proxy Server from the GUI.
5) The SmartFilter icon
is not appearing in the Control Panel after installation
Verify that the file
"CTL3D32.DLL" is located in the Windows NT /system32
sub-directory. If it's not there, find a copy of it (this is a
standard NT system file) and place it in the /system32
sub-directory, and reboot the machine.
