Answers:

1) How to configure Notes SMTP MTA
Details: Creating an SMTP Server Connection document basics:

Connection type
Identify the type of Connection document as SMTP.

Source server
This field defaults to the hierarchical name of the Notes server where the SMTP MTA resides. For example, mta_server/acme.

Source domain
Enter the name of the Notes Domain (for example, acme), where the SMTP MTA server belongs.

Destination server
If you specify a Destination domain, such as the Internet, and do not specify a mail relay, you may enter comments in this field. For example, you might want to enter a descriptive term such as all_internet_hosts to differentiate this document from others like it in the Connection view.  If you specify a relay host configuration using the "Optional network address" field, enter the name for the relay host in this field.

Destination domain
Enter the Domain name that you assigned to the Internet Domain name field on the Foreign SMTP Domain document. This creates a link between the MTA server and an Internet domain so that the Notes Mail Router can send outbound SMTP mail.

Optional network address
To configure the SMTP MTA server to support a relay host configuration, enter its IP address (for example, 130.000.00.00) or Internet domain name in this field. Note that you might also specify a destination server name when configuring an optional network address.   If you enter the Internet domain name of a relay host (for example, relay.acme.com), the SMTP MTA performs an extra DNS lookup to determine the IP address for the domain name. While entering an IP address avoids the extra DNS lookup, it may be an advantage to enter a domain name if the relay host has multiple MX records for reliability or for throughput considerations.
Specifying an optional network address causes the SMTP MTA to establish an SMTP session with the relay host. When the SMTP MTA completes outbound mail transfer to the relay host, it is the responsibility of the relay host to determine the next-hop routing for the specified destination (Internet domain).

2) How to setup Notes MTA as mail relay
If you specify a Destination domain, such as the Internet, and do not specify a mail relay, you may enter comments in this field. For example, you might want to enter a descriptive term such as all_internet_hosts to differentiate this document from others like it in the Connection view.  Also make sure you have filled in DNS server  information in the NT network configuruation screen in the control panel. This enables NT to make MX queries to relay mail.

3) How to get Notes to accept configuration
Make sure you totally stop and restart the MTA and the MTA will take in the total configuration. Some items you can configure online and it will take it. If in doubt restart MTA.

4) How do I setup Notes to accept multiple domains?
Go to the Global Document, and in Internet Suffix field, enter:

    domain1.com
    domain2.com
    etc...

Save and restart the world.  Notes accepts mail for as many domains as you specify.  All outbound mail will look like user@domain1.com, unless you go to the People Record and put this into the short name field:

    user@domain2.com
    user

A user can be up to 8 characters, and must be unique within the organization.

5) Why does mail bounce at midnight?
Lotus runs compression programs at midnight. This prevents SMTP mail from being delivered sometimes and messages bounce. Make sure your email relay can queue and resend and NOT just time out the connection and bounce the mail.
